Obstetrics

Pregnancy is a wonderful phenomenon that a woman can experience in her life. Every mother's hope is to deliver a healthy baby. Perinatal time period can complicate either woman's or baby's health. Obstetricians in Sri Lanka, along with the PSSL play a vital role to improve the perinatal health care in Sri Lanka.

Neonatal & Pediatric

Neonatal mortality has reached a significant low in Sri Lanka. Over 25% are due to pre term or low birth weight babies. Improving the outcome of these babies can improve the statistics. The survivors may have chronic disabilities leading to a poor quality of life. It is now established that basic care during the first few days of life will greatly improve morbidity and mortality of all neonates, and this care does not need expensive interventions.

Community Medicine

In Public Health, we believe in providing care throughout life. We consider pregnancy and post-partum period vital in this, where a new life begins. Public health midwives ensure mothers and babies are safe throughout the pregnancy and after delivery. These health services have made Sri Lanka proud with the lowest maternal, neonatal mortality and perinatal mortality in the South Asian region.

Genetics

It is necessary to understand the genetic aetiology of disorders in the perinatal period because, although these conditions are rare, that understanding enables institution of appropriate treatment for the affected babies and makes it possible to provide appropriate genetic counseling and reproductive advice to the parents so that they could be assisted to have a normal child
